Reimagining recovery narratives following adversity
Disconnected And Then Broken
This pottery piece was created to represent the former disconnection between my inner child and myself as an adult. Following the pattern of left-to-right writing systems, the inner child is on the left because it existed before I became an adult.
You'll notice that my inner child is fairly well-formed and is facing upwards, with its arms reaching out, trying to connect to the larger figure. It has 'hidden' tears, barely visible to the outside world (take a closer look, and you'll see them engraved).
The larger figure represents me as a struggling adult CSA survivor. Conversely, it is face down, so you are unable to see the facial expression. When I was in this state, I was barely able to cope. It has stumps for arms, so it is unable to reach out and connect to the inner child.
The perforated area on the head and in the heart and chest area represents where I feel stress whenever I recall my CSA experience. It is 2D (two-dimensional) to reflect the feeling of being emotionally flat inside. It is almost symbolic that out of the seven pottery pieces I made, only these two didn't survive the kiln process; they both got damaged.
