Unfinished Question Mark

I never asked my father WHY he had beaten my mother whilst I lay within her womb.

I never asked him WHAT he was thinking as he repeatably pummelled her senseless.

I never asked him WHERE he considered next to kick and punch her as she pleaded with him to stop, terrified at the prospect of losing me.

I never asked him WHEN he decided to stop beating her or who had called the ambulance.

My mother's strength, courage, tenacity, love, and determination helped see me into this world. I later learned as she wept as I was handed over to an aunt for safekeeping.

I never asked my father WHY, WHAT, WHERE and WHEN, so I didn't get any answers. As you are reading this, there are too many children facing the same circumstances as I did and far too many mothers experiencing domestic abuse and violence as my mother did. The exhibit remains incomplete, a symbol of unanswered questions.
